Rapper and social activist Killer Mike found himself in a legal tangle on Sunday evening near the 66th Annual Grammy Awards venue in Los Angeles. This unfortunate incident unfolded on a night when Killer Mike, also known as Michael Render, celebrated three Grammy wins.

The Los Angeles Police Department disclosed that Killer Mike was arrested on a misdemeanor battery charge following a physical altercation in the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court, close to the Arena where the Grammys took place. The 48-year-old artist, one half of the acclaimed rap duo Run the Jewels, was detained, handcuffed, and subsequently transported to the LAPD Central Division.

As of Sunday evening local time, Killer Mike was reportedly in the process of being released, according to the police department. CNN reached out to Killer Mike’s representatives for comment, but there has been no response so far.

Despite this legal hiccup, Killer Mike’s Grammy night was a triumph, as he clinched three prestigious awards. He secured the best rap album for “Michael,” along with best rap performance and best rap song for his single “Scientists and Engineers.”

In his spirited acceptance speech during the pre-televised ceremony, Killer Mike had a message for those who believe age hinders the rap game: “For all the people out there that think you get too old to rap, b******t… I don’t give a damn if you’re 78 rapping about how many gals you got in the nursing home, make sure we keep hip-hop alive.”

The award-winning single, “Scientists and Engineers,” features collaborations with Andre 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane.
