Dangerous Listeria Outbreak Hits California: Cheese, Yogurt, Sour Cream Recall Alert!

A recent FDA inspection uncovered alarming levels of listeria at a Modesto, California food manufacturer, prompting an urgent recall of various dairy products across 13 different brands. Among the affected brands are well-known names like Whole Foods Market’s 365, Food City, Casa Cardenas, Don Francisco, and Tio Francisco. Shockingly, some of these products have been linked to a listeria outbreak spanning an alarming nine years, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives.

The recall was initiated after the state of Hawaii detected listeria in a sample of Rizo Bros.’ Aged Cotija cheese back in January, leading to a swift response from Rizo-López Foods.

Here’s a rundown of the dairy products affected by the recall and the brands associated with them:

  • Blanco Suave, Cotija cheese, Cotija cheese (grated), Cotija Enchilado, Cotija Rellado, Crema Centroamericana, Crema La Deliciosa, Crema La Suprema, Crema Latina, Creme Menonita, Crema Mexicana, Crema Nortena, Crema Santa Isabel Centroamericana, Latina, Mexicana, Fresco, Fresco (Michoacano), Oaxaca, Oaxaca (shredded), Panela, Panela Barra, Queso Crema, Ricotta from Whole Milk, Ricotta from Part Skim, Queso Fresco, Queso Para Frier, Queso Seco, Requeson, Yogurt in Plain, Strawberry, Peach and Mango flavors.

A total of twenty-six individuals have been infected with listeria between June 15, 2014, and December 10, 2023, with twenty-three requiring hospitalization and tragically, two fatalities reported. California has been the hardest hit by this outbreak, with other affected states including Arizona, Colorado, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington.

It’s crucial to note that listeria is a severe illness, capable of causing miscarriages, stillbirths, and fatalities, particularly among vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, young children, and the elderly. The CDC emphasizes the importance of taking immediate action to safeguard against this deadly pathogen.

As this recall unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of food safety regulations and vigilance in protecting public health. Stay informed and stay safe!
